without himHe @@@@@I do not think we do so well without himHe has a fine dignified manner, which suits the head of such a house, and keeps everybody in their placeLady Bertram seems more of a cipher now than when he is at home; and nobody else can keep MrsBut, Mary, do not fancy that Maria Bertram cares for HenryI am sure Julia does not, or she would not have flirted as she did last night with MrYates; and though he and Maria are very good friends, I think she likes Sotherton too well to be inconstant “I would not give much for MrRushworth’s chance if Henry stept in before the articles were signed “If you have such a suspicion, something must be done; and as 142 Mansfield Park soon as the play is all over, we will talk to him seriously and make him know his own mind; and if he means nothing, we will send him off, though he is Henry, for a time Julia did suffer, however, though MrsGrant discerned it not, and though it escaped the notice of many of her own family likewise She had loved, she did love still, and she had all the suffering which a warm temper and a high spirit were likely to endure under the disappointment of a dear, though irrational hope, with a strong sense of ill-usageHer heart was sore and angry, and she was capable only of angry consolationsThe sister with whom she was used to be on easy terms was now become her greatest enemy: they were alienated from each other; and Julia was not superior to the hope of some distressing end to the attentions which were still carrying on there, some punishment to Maria for conduct so shameful towards herself as well as towards MrWith no material fault of temper, or difference of opinion, to prevent their being very good friends while their interests were the same, the sisters, under such a trial as this, had not affection or principle enough to make them merciful or just, to give them honour or compassionMaria felt her triumph, and pursued her purpose, careless of Julia; and Julia could never see Maria distinguished by Henry Crawford without trusting that it would create jealousy, and bring a public disturbance at last Fanny saw and pitied much of this in Julia; but there was no outward fellowship between themJulia made no communication, and Fanny took no libertiesThey were two solitary sufferers, or connected only by Fanny’s consciousness The inattention of the two brothers and the aunt to Julia’s discomposure, and their blindness to its true cause, must be imputed to the fullness of their own mindsThey were totally preoccupied Tom was engrossed by the concerns of his theatre, and saw nothing that did not immediately relate to itEdmund, between his theatrical and his real part, between Miss Crawford’s claims and his own conduct, between love and consistency, was equally unobservant; and MrsNorris was too busy in contriving and directing the general little matters of the company, superintending their various dresses with economical expedient, for which nobody thanked her, and saving, with delighted integrity, half a crown here and there to the 143 Jane Austen absent Sir Thomas, to have leisure for watching the behaviour, or guarding the happiness of his daughters 144 Mansfield Park CHAPTER XVIII EVERYTHING WAS NOW in a regular train: theatre, actors, actresses, and dresses, were all getting forward; but though no other great impediments arose, Fanny found, before many days were past, that it was not all uninterrupted enjoyment to the party themselves, and that she had not to witness the continuance of such unanimity and delight as had been almost too much for her at fir | | Friday, December 31st, 2010 | | 8:06 am |

Again @@@@@It was your impostor’s base camp Again there was silence on the line, only Jason Bourne’s steady breathing audible“You’re wrong, Alex,” he said at last, his voice pensive, floating“It’s the Jackal—by way of Hong Kong and Macao, but it’s still the Jackal “David, now you’re not making senseCarlos hasn’t anything to do with taipans or Hong Kong or messages from MacaoThose old men were Chinese, not French or Italian or German or whateverThis is out of Asia, not Europe “The old men, they’re the only ones he trusts,” continued David Webb, his voice still low and cold, the voice of Jason Bourne“ ‘The old men of Paris,’ that’s what they were calledThey were his network, his couriers throughout EuropeWho suspects decrepit old men, whether they’re beggars or whether they’re just holding on to the last remnants of mobility? She could hear her own heart @@@@@ She could hear her own heart beating "Hello, Rhett," she said, "how are you?" She knew it was a foolish, inadequate thing to say, but she had to say somethingRhett's mouth twitched"I'm remarkably well for a dead man," he drawled, "or was I mistaken? I thought I glimpsed a widow at the dock in CharlestonI had to say somethingI wasn't married, I mean I didn't have a husband-" "Don't try to explain, Scarlett It's not your forte "Forty? What are you talking about?" Was he being mean? Please don't be mean, RhettWhat brings you to Ireland? I thought you were in England "What made you think that?" Why are we standing here making conversation about nothing at all? Why can't I think? Why am I saying these stupid things? "You didn't get off the ship in Boston Scarlett's heart leapt to the meaning of what he'd saidHe'd taken the trouble to find out where she was going, he cared about her, he wanted to keep her from disappearingHappiness flooded her heart "May I assume from your cheerful attire that you're no longer mourning my death?" said Rhett"Shame on you, Scarlett, I'm not yet cold in my grave) She looked down in horror at her peasant clothes, then up at his impeccably tailored hacking jacket and perfectly tied white stock Why did he always have to make her feel like a fool? Why couldn't she at least feel angry? Because she loved himWhether he believed it or didn't, it was the truthWithout planning or thought of consequences, Scarlett looked at the man who had been her husband for so many years of lies"I love you, Rhett," she said with simple dignity"How unfortunate for you, ScarlettYou always seem to be in love with another woman's husband He lifted his cap politely"I have another commitment, please excuse me if I leave you now He turned his back on her and walked away | | Wednesday, December 29th, 2010 | | 7:58 am |
@@@@@His voice was softer than @@@@@His voice was softer than before–sleepy“If you try…” He yawnedThe warning struck me as a bit of an insultWhy would I try to sneak past him? Where would I go? Into the hands of the barbarians out there waiting for me, all of them wishing that I would make exactly that kind of stupid attempt? Or, supposing Icould somehow sneak past them, back out into the desert that had nearly baked me to death the last time I'd tried to cross it? I wondered what he thought me capable ofWhat plan did he think I was hatching to overthrow their little world? Did I really seem so powerful? Wasn't it clear how pathetically defenseless I was? I could tell when he was deeply asleep because he started twitching the way Melanie remembered he occasionally didHe only slept so restlessly when he was upsetI watched his fingers clench and unclench, and I wondered if he was dreaming that they were wrapped around my neck The days that followed–perhaps a week of them, it was impossible to keep track–were very quietJared was like a silent wall between me and everything else in the world, good or bad There was no sound but that of my own breathing, my own movements; there were no sights but the black cave around me, the circle of dull light, the familiar tray with the same rations, the brief, stolen glimpses of Jared; there were no touches but the pitted rocks against my skin; there were no tastes but the bitter water, the hard bread, the bland soup, the woody roots, over and over again It was a very strange combination: constant terror, persistent aching physical discomfort, and excruciating monotonyOf the three, the killer boredom was the hardest to takeMy prison was a sensory-deprivation chamber Together, Melanie and I worried that we were going to go mad We both hear a voice in our head, she pointed outhat's never a good sign We're going to forget how to speak,I worriedow long has it been since anyone talked to us? Four days ago you thanked Jeb for bringing us food, and he said you were welcomeWell, I think it was four days agoFour long sleeps ago, at leasttop chewing your nails–it took me years to break that habit But the long, scratchy nails bothered me don't really think we need to worry about bad habits in the long term Jared didn't let Jeb bring food againInstead, someone brought it to the end of the hall and Jared retrieve | | Monday, December 27th, 2010 | | 7:58 am |

There is no direct parallel between the @@@@@ There is no direct parallel between the two booksThe world has changed and toughened since Dos Passos wroteThe Naked and the Dead is a tougher book, one that reflects the variables that time and change have introducedBut, like its distinguished predecessor, Norman Mailer's book is essentially the story of men themselves rather than of their sometimes purposeless fightingThese men who tear their hearts out trying to capture an island from the Japanese are the product of the years they have livedThey have been formed by their wives, their sweethearts, their farms, their jobs, their collegesTo each, war has been an activating agent I believe you will never forget these men -- frightened men, sometimes obscene, humorous, sick, scabrous, full of yearning for home as it was, or home as it seems in memoryThey are men in war, but like most of us, they do not know where they are going; they know only their own past Because I believe The Naked and the Dead is a great novel I can say that if you have read Thomas Boyd's Through the Wheat, Remarque's All Quiet on the Western Front, Hemingway's Farewell to Arms, or Three Soldiers, you cannot afford to pass by this astonishing performance by a young man who at twenty-five knows more about the core of man than many a writer of twice his years Rinehart & Company, Inc New York Toronto
